The original vocal style that emerged on the Iberian Peninsula during the 16th and 17th centuries was based on the counterpoint of Palestrina and the Italian vocal tradition. However, the Spanish and Portuguese composers were able to enhance the musical language of their Italian models with elements of the local tradition that arose from encounters between many different cultures.
