Naples was one of the most important musical centres of the 18th century. Opera was the main theme there, but sacred music played a noless important role. Francesco Durante was among
the most respected figures of Naples, and it is worth nothing that he was one of the few composers from there who did not compose any operas, but his pedagogical activities and sacred music were all the richer for it. Domenico Scarlatti, son of the famous Alessandro Scarlatti, worked mainly at the royal court in Madrid, but in Naples he created a number of remarkable sacred works, outstanding amongst which is above all the Stabat Mater — a work of extraordinary depth and emotional power.
