For several friends
Although the music of the British Isles absorbed many influences from the continent and from Italy and France in particular, throughout the 16th and 17th centuries it always maintained an individual character of its own with its peculiar use of counterpoint and its expressive handling of dissonance and chromaticism. This can be heard in fantasias by William Lawes, intimate pieces by
Matthew Locke, and the works of Henry Purcell, including the compositions in which he attempted to imitate “the most famous Italian masters”.
Matthew Locke – For Several Friends, The Broken Consort
William Lawes – Suites for violins, viola, and organ
Henry Purcell – Sonatas in three and four parts
