Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli and G. F. Sances were all significantly associated with Venice - until his death, Monteverdi served as maestro di capella in the Basilica of St. Mark. Cavalli was one of his students and subsequently became an organist at the basilica and later a music director. Sances, on the other hand, worked in Venice for a relatively short time and spent most of his career with Vienna, where he joined the imperial court. The selection from Monteverdi’s famous collection is complemented by two settings of the mass ordinary. In all the compositions, we can admire the dazzling richness and diversity of Italian baroque music.
