Leçons de ténèbres
The Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah, emotive Old Testament texts, have served as the basis for many musical settings since the Middle Ages. They were very popular in France, especially in the Baroque period, and have been set to music by such greats as Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Michel Delalande, François Couperin and others. The concert is based mainly on the works of M.–A. Charpentier, who, alongside his great compositions with choir and orchestra, was fond of using the colour of female solo voices for the Leçons de ténèbres.
