Il basso mondo
The first half of the 18th century was a very interesting period both for the viola da gamba and for the violoncello. Corelli’s Twelve Violin Sonatas, Op. 5 undoubtedly constituted the most popular collection of chamber music of the first half of the 18th century. Giovanni Battista Bononcini himself a cellist (among other things), belonged to the first generation of composers to write solo music for cello. Supplementing the programme are two sonatas by composers who had their works for cello published in Paris, where the two instruments in question were truly of key importance to concert life.
