Mozart's Swan Song
Mozart began composing Requiem in D minor in Vienna in 1791, in the year of his death, and did not live to finish the composition or to see it produced. The first performance of the completed funeral mass took place in Vienna two years later, and the composition quickly gained fame in Europe and worldwide. Symphony no. 40 in G minor from 1788 is Mozart’s penultimate symphony, and one of only two he composed in a minor key. Robert Schumann praised its “Greek lightness and grace.”
