The individual parts of the mass ordinary which Zelenka composed in 1724–25 were certainly not intended as a single work, but in addition to their high musical quality, they are connected by a unified language, a related tonal plan, and similar instrumentation, especially the use of trombones. The form of an imaginary mass represents an ideal way of presenting this part of Zelenka’s work to contemporary audiences. Dixit Dominus is the first composition that Handel embarked on after his arrival in Rome, and it seems the music of the psalm reflects his amazement at Roman Baroque architecture. The listener is instantly overwhelmed by the endless firework of ideas, virtuosity, and compositional techniques.
