The individual parts of the mass ordinary which Zelenka composed in 1724–25 were certainly not intended as a single work, but in addition to their high quality, they are connected by a unified language, a related tonal plan, and similar instrumentation. The form of an imaginary mass is an ideal way of presenting this part of Zelenka’s oeuvre to contemporary audiences. Missa 1724 will be complemented by two sacred motets by the famous Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. The virtuoso solo part will be performed by the Canadian soprano Karina Gauvin, an internationally acclaimed interpreter of baroque music.
