The French composers Jean-Fery Rebel and François Couperin have several things in common: both were born in Paris to renowned musical families, worked in the service of the kings Louis XIV and Louis XV, and died in Paris. Along with some of their contemporaries, they bravely resisted the nationalistic tendency of the period to guard French music against Italian influences. Their admiration for “transalpine” composers and for Arcangelo Corelli in particular is undeniably reflected in the sonatas heard on this programme.
