Il Polifemo
Polyphemus, theone-eyed, three-fingered cyclops from ancient Greek legends, became a central figure in many mythical stories and also in their musical settings penned by Baroque composers. This son of Poseidon and giant of unsurmountable strength appears in a number of legends, the best known of which are his encounters with Odysseus during the latter’s homeward journey and with Theseus, who kills Polyphemus. The Italian bass Luigi De Donato is the ideal embodiment of the character Polyphemus because of his voice and his charisma, and he will appear together with Collegium 1704 in Prague for the premiere of a chamber concert project that will breathe life into ancient Greek legends.
